A Hole In Your Soul

Aware of it or not, most people suffer from a condition best described as spiritual dis-ease. The hyphen is not a typo. Dis-ease far more accurately defines conditions such as alcoholism, anxiety, or depression than does the word disease, which implies these conditions are purely of a physical nature.

People like to sweep their own spiritual dis-ease under the carpet. They become workaholics, alcoholics, sleepaholics, food, drug or shopping junkies. They collect money to buy more things to make them happy. They go to the doctor to get pills to numb the symptoms of their dis-ease. They’ll try anything to dull the pain. Still, they trip over that lump under the carpet every day. Unless we lift the carpet and address the source of the problem, it’s just a matter of time before we trip over it and hurt ourselves.

In my own case, I spent more than 20 years living with a broken soul that kept the light out and sealed the darkness inside. It was a scary, lonely, hopeless place where the joy and happiness that were supposed to reside within were replaced with fear, silent desperation and detachment from others. It was a disconnection from spirit, a nearly total divorce of life and love.

I was one of the fortunate people. Alcohol and drugs ravaged my soul to the point of no return, where I was forced to choose between life and death. Finding myself firmly wedged between a rock and a hard place opened my mind to the possibility that a Higher Power could help me, which led to a spiritual healing experience that changed my life nearly twenty years ago.

You don’t, however, have to be an alcoholic or heroin addict to benefit from a spiritual healing. Many a housewife or successful businessman suffers from the same sense of spiritual dis-ease, although the signs aren’t always as obvious. There’s no point in kidding ourselves that as long as we are functional, well-behaved members of society that we aren’t hurting anyone. Spiritual dis-ease affects everyone. It not only affects our own lives, but also the lives of our children, co-workers, neighbors, or even strangers we pass on the street. How many times have we driven past a broken down motorist on a busy highway or denied our local convenience store employee the small pleasure of a kind word or a smile? Some people would rather face a root canal than hold a door open for their fellow humans while exiting a building. We've all seen it.

In doing so, we have unknowingly caused a ripple effect. The stranded motorist becomes stressed and passes his tension along to those that he or she meets. If enough people deprive the store clerk of a simple smile, the clerk eventually stops smiling, too, which affects every customer he meets.

A spiritual healing does the opposite. It removes the dis-ease inside and fills a person with an inner peace. When we feel good about ourselves, we not only make our own life a better place, but make the world a better place in general. You were born to live free and happily, not to spend your entire life as a prisoner of disconnection, detachment and dis-ease.
